Mathieu Da Costa Challenge

The annual Mathieu Da Costa Challenge of the Department of Canadian Heritage is a fun way for young people to learn more about Canada’s rich cultural diversity. The contest invites young Canadians between the ages of 9 and 18 to submit a piece of creative writing (e.g. short story, poem, etc.) or artwork celebrating the contributions made by Canadians of Aboriginal, African or other ethnocultural backgrounds to the building of Canada.

This month in the T.A.B we discussed our latest reads, fundraising ideas, went to the book store to pick out some new magazines, got the grant update, talked about T.A.B self evaluation, the new forum and helped set up for the Pumpkin Personality program.

The magazines we picked out were the latest playstation magazine, the mag, mad and Teen mag. Some of the articles are fashion finds (teen), soul caliber 3 first review (playsation), scary books ( the mag) and King Kong (MAD).

We also have a few upcoming programs such as a Halo2 tournament on the 18th of Novemberfrom 5-8 ages 15-22 but 14 with permission slip. We also have a RuneScape pk (player killing) night Tuesday, November 1st.

On August 24th the TAB is having a bake sale to raise money for a shopping trip to Chapters. On this trip they will pick out cool new books, magazines, etc. for the Teen Room, so everyone who uses the Teen Room will benefit!
To ensure that this is the best bake sale EVER, raising lots of money to get lots of new stuff, you can help us out, in a whole bunch of ways!

Turn your great sales skills into profit for the Teen Room and sign up to work a shift at the bake sale. (Hey, there might even be a free cookie or two in the deal). See Laura or Liz to sign up.
Come to the bake sale program on Tuesday August 23rd from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. We will be making neat hot drink mix packages to sell at the sale. No baking skills are required! This is an all ages program, so everyone is welcome.

Tomorrow night (Friday) at 5:00 is the jewelry making workshop! If you come you can learn all kinds of different jewelry making techniques, from basic friendship bracelets to how to make the cool safety pin bracelets in the picture.
This is going to be a fun, informal program. If you have music you want to listen to while you work on your jewelry, bring some cds. If you have friends that want to come at the last minute, bring them along!

LAN Party

On Friday, July 15, 2005 we will be holding our first LAN Party at the Picton Branch. Our main focus will be Counter-Strike but other games may be available.

For those of you who don't know what Counter-Strike is; it's the most popular online first person shooter for the PC. It's held the #1 spot for five years with an average of 85000 players playing at any given time. It accounts for 70% of the FPS online community.

Counter-Strike is team-based, and casts players in the role of terrorist or counter-terrorist. Each team has access to different ammunition and equipment, and each player has unique attributes and the ability to upgrade their gear as they successfully complete each mission. A growing number of missions are available, each having specific goals, such as rescuing a hostage or eliminating key enemy structures.

Hi Everybody.. so I'm coming to the end of my first week as the only teen services person at the County of Prince Edward Public Library.. and I've come up with a FEW ideas about how to make it even better for teens. A bus will be leaving from P.E.C.I at 12:30 on Saturday, June 4th going to the WellingtonArena for the Symposium. It'll be stopping at Pinecrest school on it's way, so plan to be there!

Colleen's Gone and the Art Show is Coming!

Hello everyone!

Yesterday was Colleen's last day in the Teen Room as she is going to have a baby and is moving away. But that doesn't mean that things in the Teen Room have stopped! We're still running the 2005 teen art show in the Picton Branch of the Library. I'm on the search for people to LEND us their artwork - the show will run July 11 until August 15, and we promise to keep the artwork safe and on display. We will take the following kinds of art:

painting
collage
sketching
pencil crayon
sculpture
crayons, markers and construction paper
mixed media
digital art
photography

And.... ANY other kind of art that YOU can think of! You can drop it off in Picton starting July 1st, or you can drop it off at any other branch of the County of Prince Edward Public Library! So, here is a quick update for those of you looking for current library info.

· February 26^th (It’s a Saturday) is going to be the official opening of the TeenRoom. For those of you who have been using the TeenRoom, you know that it’s really already open and has been for some time. The official opening is to let the library board, friends of the library, county council and the press see the set-up phase of the project.
What this means for TeenRoom users is that it will be closed for a couple of hours in the early afternoon. Talk about irony… closed for the opening.

· March 4^th (though it might change to the 5^th) is the date for the second Halo 2 tournament. If you want to participate, contact Lucas at computerlab@peclibrary.org . I can’t guarantee that there will be any space left, but you can try.

· March 14th to 19^th is the March Break. WooHoo! If you’re interested in setting up your own cool webpage, be sure to sign up for our CyberCamp. For info, leave me a message here or email Lucas at computerlab@peclibrary.org .

What does an Xbox tournament have to do with the library???

Here's how it is. The library is not just about books. It's about reading, yes, but we know that you read a lot when you're on the computer... we know that you read magazines and cereal boxes and all kinds of things that aren't books.

And the library is about fun.

So, that's where the Halo 2 Tournament comes in. It's happening next Saturday after the library is closed and if you talk to Lucas, there might be a spot on the waiting list for you... It's full, but there's always someone who doesn't show. And, if you win, you're likely to get a prize that has to do with reading...

That's what an X box tournament has to do with the library.

Construction Update

Hi :)
Just had to post that the TeenRoom is back up and running. The walls are still bare and there's still stuff to be finished (like carpeting) but the place is functional again. So get your behinds out of the kids room to discover the new and rediscover the old in the TeenRoom.

FORGIVENESS DAYS ARE HERE!

Right on!

Now you can bring back your severely overdue library books for free! During Library Week which is October 18 to 24, all library late fees will be forgiven when the books are returned. So haul out that book that you've been pretending you don't see under your bed, dust it off and return it to any branch of the library - no charge!

Actually, scratch the dusting if you want. We'll even take your dust bunnies. We just want the books.

FYI: If you get overdues when we don't have Forgiveness Days on, you might like to know that our fines are really huge! It'll cost you a whole paycheck just to return one lousy magazine!
Kidding!
Late fines are 10 cents a library open day per item. So, if you have three things overdue by five days, that'll give you a whopping $1.50 in late charges. And you can return books at any branch. So, even if you picked it up in Milford, you can return it to Bloomfield, for example.

Better idea: Take advantage of Forgiveness Days and celebrate Library Week (Oct 18 to 24) by returning your antique overdues - NO CHARGE!

Still under construction :( ... but some new books have arrived to console me

Hmm... well... what did I say? The construction is not done yet. It is starting to take shape though, which is cool. I can actually see that the TeenRoom is going to be quite funky and definitely *the* place to be... when it's finally done.

Anyway, as I said, we got some new books in. And if you have to be consoled, a pile of awesome reads is as good a way as any. So, here's the short list (come in to the library for the long one):

THIS IS A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
THE TeenRoom IS CURRENTLY CLOSED FOR RENOVATIONS
While this may seem like a great/fabulous/exciting thing... IT ISN'T.
Well, okay, maybe it is a bit, but mostly it's a big pain right now. It means that we don't have our big homework/yu-gi-oh card table or our extra 'teens only' computers. It also means that I can't even get to my own desk... ack!
Anyway... the public service announcement is that you may want to call in to book a computer or just be prepared for a busy downstairs area.
The plan is that we'll have our TeenRoom back by SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 25 just in time for our next Teen Advisory Board.
In reality... we'll see.

So it's that evil time of year again...

So the S-word is back in action this week for most of you. That means no more lazy days hanging out with nothing to do. That also means back to all the extra-curricluar activities that you like to do or have to do depending on how pushy your parents are. (You can't tell me that some of you aren't unwilling virtuoso's on the piano when all you ever asked for was a set of drums) .

This time of year also means new stuff going on at the library. New stuff for kids, new books and yes, new stuff for teens to do in the TeenRoom. So, whether your mom forces you to come or whether you already know how cool hanging out in the TeenRoom is, we hope you'll include some of our programmes in your array of extracurricular craziness.

Here's a random listing of some of the things we're planning or thinking about planning for the coming school year. Keep in mind that none of these are set in stone, so if you see something that looks good - LET ME KNOW! - or I'm liable to cut if from the list without warning.

Get your teacher to bring your class for a visit. Just think about the actual work that you'll get out of!
Sign up for our Halloween Pumpkin Carving Contest
Ask about the Artist of the Month
Get involved in the Youth/Council Cooperative
Finishing high school next June? Plan to come to our Futures Day in November.
Look for our Author Talks coming in the fall. We're hoping to get two canadian authors, one novelist and one graphic novelist.
Any other wonderful programmes that our wee brains can come up with!

How hard is it to decide what book to buy?

Ever gone to the book store and spent an hour deciding that you can't decided what to buy? Know how hard it can be to pick something that you think you'll like from start to finish just by reading the back cover?

Ha! I laugh at your confusion. I'm currently tackling the task of buying a wack-load of books for the TeenRoom and have reached a whole new level of shopper-angst. Try making a list as long as your arm of books that someone else would like and you'll be in my boat.

With that in mind, let me remind you that the library always welcomes suggestions. There is a form that you can fill out with the book info the next time you're in the library. Or you can just leave me a comment here or email me at teenroom@peclibrary.org.

So, the next time you read a book and love it, let us know. If you loved it, others will too. And why keep a good thing to yourself? Besides, you might have read the first book of a 50 book series and be looking for a cheeper way to read the rest of them. That's what we're here for: to buy the books you want to read. Duh? What did you think the library was for?

Popcorn anyone?

Friday, August 20th we had our second last Pizza Programme of the summer. I guess Pizza Programme was a bit of a misnomer for this one as we watched a movie and ate popcorn - no pizza in sight.

We watched Thirteen, a movie about - you guessed it - a thirteen year old girl who, in an effort to be 'cool', falls in with a scene that has her getting way out of control. If you're a little older, a movie about younger teens might sound a little cheezy but I think most people would be surprised. It's pretty hardcore and doesn't gloss over any of the trouble she gets into. In the end you see how letting the wrong people into your life can go bad in a hurry.

We had a small but interested - and interesting - group in to watch and share their thoughts on the movie and all had a good time. At least they all said they had a good time, but I'm an adult, so most younger teens say what they think I want to hear!

Liz frightens patrons on Friday the 13th!

Hehehe!

Last Friday we held a haunted library night from 8 till 11pm. There were three teams and three sets of clues and riddles to solve. Each team also had a list of quotes and had to find out what story each one came from in order to win.

Everyone who came got free pizza but the winning team got a package of good stuff to go with it. All in all, I think it was a fun night. At least, I had fun doing it. I got to read two classic works from Edgar Allen Poe (19th century horror/suspense writer). They were The Raven, a long poem featuring a talking bird and A Tell-Tale Heart, a short story where a madman tries to convince the reader that he's not crazy by describing how reasonably he murdered his employer. Sound fun?

Liz (Student Employee Extraordinaire) and Tiffany (Student Page About To Venture Across the Land) also read stories. In all, there were six stories to be heard, the two that I read and the four listed here:

Battlegrounds by Stephen King (about an assassin who gets attacked by a troop of G.I. Joe figurines)
The Man from the South by Roahl Dahl (about a guy who has a gambling habit that includes winning actual human fingers)
Blue Beard by Charles Perrault (a classic story about a... ahem... slightly controlling husband with a dark secret)
Strawberry Spring by Stephen King (a short story made into an even shorter movie - about six minutes - about a college campus set on its ear by a mass murderer)
And Liz really did scare people. Just ask Randy if you see him in the library. ;)

Welcome to the virtual TeenRoom I'm creating to go along with the actual Teen Room in the Picton Branch of the County of Prince Edward Public Library.

This is going to be my listing of all things TEEN at our local public library. Before long, I intend to customize the look of the TeenRoom blog and set up a regularly updated 'New Books List', as well as a listing of programmes, book reviews and other interesting things that are going on in the TeenRoom.
